Samsung Smart Manager Blocking Android Device Management on February 17th, 2016

Updated on May 4th, 2021

Description

Samsung recently included their Smart Manager application into the Android 5.0 Lollipop software update.

Samsung Smart Manager application tries to improve smartphone performance in many ways, one being the battery life optimization. While trying to improve the battery life, Samsung Smart Manager's App Optimization closes the applications the device user has not actively used. Being a background process almost never accessed by end user, Miradore Online Client is one of these processes killed by this optimization task. By killing Miradore Online Client processes, Samsung Smart Manager also effectively blocks all the mobile device management functionalities on this device. By default, Smart Manager's App Optimization takes place after 3 days from installing the Android update where Smart Manager application is included.

We have contacted Samsung and they are now investigating options to keep mobile device management applications working while Smart Manager is running on the device. Meanwhile we will also test some workaround solutions for bypassing this problem. Currently the most feasible option is to be prevent Samsung Smart Manager application from running on the device.

For more information about Samsung Smart Manager see news article on Samsung's web site: Samsung Smart Manager

Affected service(s)

Mobile device management on Samsung devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop (OTA update available for Galaxy models S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S5, S4, Note5, Note4 and Note3).

Please note: some carriers have already excluded Smart Manager from the OTA software update they are distributing.

Workaround

We are investigating for a permanent solution to this problem in cooperation with Samsung. As a workaround you can keep prevent Smart Manager from disabling Miradore Online Client as follows:

  1. Launch Samsung Smart Manager application on the device
  2. Tap Battery
  3. Tap App optimization > Detail
  4. Tap Miradore Online Client
  5. Select "Disabled for"

This will exclude Miradore Online Client from the processes affected by App Optimization.

Update 2016-03-02

Resolution

New Android client for Miradore Online, version 2.3.7, has been released. This version contains a workaround that blocks force closure of Miradore Online on Samsung's SAFE enabled devices. This should also stop Samsung's Smart Manager from optimizing the client. The new client version may have to be opened manually once after the update for it to wake up and block force closing the client.
