The upcoming Miradore 3.7.0 release introduces support for OS X Yosemite which is the new operating system for Apple Mac computers, released on 16th October. Here in this blog post, we take a look at some of the new features of OS X Yosemite.

The most obvious change, that you are likely to notice first in OS X Yosemite, is the new brighter visual style. The icon style has been changed, and it is now similar to the style that was introduced in iOS 7.

Dock is no longer fake 3d, but translucent and flat. In this case, however, flat is not a step in the wrong direction, as the Dock looks a lot clearer now. One aspect of the new visual style that easily goes unnoticed is the new system font which looks beautiful especially on Retina displays.

But OS X Yosemite is not just a facelift update. One of the most exciting new features is Continuity. Continuity allows your OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 devices (fairly recent iOS devices that support Continuity) to work together. For example, if your iPhone rings when you are using your Mac, you can answer the call on your Mac and use it as a speaker phone. Also if you are writing an email or working on a document with your Mac, you may seamlessly switch to your iPad and continue working without losing any of the drafted content. And what makes it even better, is that Handoff has already been built-in into many applications in Yosemite, and there are APIs for application programmers for adding Handoff support to their own applications as well.

OS X Yosemite also fixes one fundamental issue with Apple’s iCloud storage service. Years ago, Apple used to have iDisk service, a cloud drive where users could store any files. It was later replaced with iCloud which required applications to specifically support iCloud in order to store files. The new iCloud Drive brings back a proper cloud storage for all types of files. iCloud Drive is shown as a folder in Finder, and files can be dragged and dropped between the iCloud Drive and the local drive. iCloud Drive is also synced with iOS 8 devices, which simplifies the management of files with multiple devices.

Those are some of the major updates in OS X Yosemite. But there are also many smaller but important updates. For example:

  • Many built-in applications have been revamped
  • The Spotlight search has become a really useful search tool for online searches
  • Application developers have new APIs to work with

In my opinion, Continuity, iCloud Drive, and all the other improvements are all absolutely fantastic, but think how cool it would be if it was possible to extend the continuity theme outside the Apple ecosystem as well! What if you could switch from your Mac to your Android phone and vice versa, wouldn’t that be something awesome? Apple, how about that?

All in all, the first impressions on OS X are very positive, and we are proud to announce that Miradore is able to provide up-to-date management tools for all those tech savvy Mac lovers who are going to adopt OS X Yosemite.  If you want to know more, you may ask for details by email (support(at), and follow us on Twitter.
