Unlock a local Mac user account

Updated on December 1st, 2025

With Miradore, you can unlock a local user account on your managed Mac device after the user fails their sign-in attempt too many times.

In this article

When creating a password policy for local users on a managed Mac device, you can set the maximum number of failed attempts for signing in. When the user exceeds this limit, the account is locked. Miradore enables you to unlock these accounts.

Note: You can only unlock local user accounts on devices where a password policy for local users was deployed through Miradore. This feature cannot be used to unlock user accounts managed in Active Directory or Open Directory, or if the password policy was not deployed through Miradore.

Important: This feature cannot be used to remotely unlock a Mac device after sending the Lock device command from Miradore. It can only be used to unlock the device user's account after too many failed sign-in attempts.

Steps

  1. Navigate to Management > Devices and open the device's page by double-clicking its row in the table.
  2. Select Security > Unlock user account.
Result: The Unlock user account dialog opens.
  3. Enter the username associated with the account you want to unlock, then select Unlock.
  4. Select Close to exit the dialog.

Result: Upon connecting to the Miradore server, the account is unlocked and the user can attempt to sign in again.

Monitoring

You can monitor the progress of the action either on the Management > Action log page or on the individual device's Device page available under Management > Devices.
