The MDM server for Apple devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 or later can be changed in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Managed without performing a factory reset.
Prerequisites
To successfully change the MDM solution used on your devices, the following requirements must be met:
- The devices must be enrolled in your current MDM solution using Automated Device Enrollment.
- The devices must run iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 or later.
When changing the MDM server for your managed devices, the devices will be unenrolled from your current solution and re-enrolled in Miradore without wiping the device. This means that all personal data remains on the device, but managed configurations, settings, and policies are removed.
Note: Applications deployed through your current MDM solution might not be removed from Mac devices. However, they are removed from iPhone and iPad devices during the unenrollment process.
To ensure a smooth re-enrollment process, it is recommended that after you recreate all managed configurations, applications, and policies in Miradore, you create a business policy that contains these. This way, all configurations, applications, and policies will be applied to the device when enrollment is finished and the business policy is applied to the device.
Important: Changing the MDM server of your managed devices in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager does not automatically apply the settings, configurations, applications, and policies created in your previous MDM solution to your devices when switching to Miradore.
Migration is initiated from Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager by changing the MDM server and setting a deadline by which the device user must complete enrollment on their device. If the user does not confirm enrollment by the time the deadline is reached, the device automatically unenrolls from the previous MDM solution and re-enrolls to Miradore.
Note: If a deadline is not set, the user does not receive a notification about having to complete enrollment and must initiate it from the device's Settings application.
MDM migration: a high-level overview
While migrating your managed devices between MDM servers is minimally disruptive for the device user, it requires careful planning and execution.
Tip: Pilot the change on a group of devices to determine any possible configuration gaps.
- Map out your current configurations.
- Prepare your Miradore site by setting up Apple Push Notification service, connecting Automated Device Enrollment, creating enrollment profiles, and, optionally, configuring Apple VPP.
- Create all required configuration profiles, managed configurations, policies, and applications and create one or more enrollment profiles on your Miradore site.
Tip: Use tags to easily identify devices to which these managed configurations must be applied. - Change the MDM server for your devices in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager and set a deadline by which the device user must complete enrollment on their device.
Note: If a deadline is not set, the user does not receive a notification about having to complete enrollment and must do it manually via the device's Settings. - Update the device list on your Miradore site and assign enrollment profiles to your devices.
- Have your device users complete enrollment.
- Monitor the enrollment process on your Miradore site.
Map out your current configurations
Prepare a list, export, or otherwise take note of the configuration profiles, applications, policies, and other managed configurations created and applied to your devices in your current MDM solution. The list should include, for example, all configuration profile settings, encryption settings, applications and their managed configurations, files, and certificates.
This list will help you recreate all managed configurations in Miradore as well as let you compare your current MDM solution's features with Miradore's capabilities.
Prepare your Miradore site
Ensure that your Miradore site is set up correctly for enrolling your Apple devices.
- Set up Apple Push Notification service on your Miradore site.
- Connect Automated Device Enrollment with your Miradore site.
- Optionally, if you plan to use Apple VPP to manage your devices' applications, configure VPP on your Miradore site.
Set up configuration profiles, applications, policies, and enrollment profiles for your devices
When you change the MDM server in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, your current MDM solution's managed configurations are not migrated to Miradore. Instead, you need to recreate those configurations in Miradore to apply them to your managed devices once they are enrolled.
- Optionally, remove any applications deployed through your current MDM solution from your devices.
Important: Applications and any data managed through the applications might stay on Mac devices after enrollment to Miradore unless they are removed using the current MDM solution. However, they are removed from iPhone and iPad devices during the unenrollment process. - On your Miradore site, do the following:
- Create the desired configuration profiles for your iPhone and iPad devices, and your Mac devices.
- Add any applications to be installed on your iPhone and iPad devices, and your Mac devices. If needed, configure the applications' settings.
- Add any certificates that may need to be deployed to your devices.
- Create one or more enrollment profiles to be used during enrollment.
- Optionally, create business policies to deploy configuration profiles, applications, files, and certificates to your devices in bulk, and Enable it.
Tip: Use the Apply to devices matching the following tags option to apply the business policy to your newly migrated devices with a specific tag.
Change your devices’ MDM server in Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager
- In Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, navigate to Devices and select the devices for which you want to change the MDM server.
- Select Assign Device Management from the ellipsis menu on the right.

- Select your Miradore server from the Device Management Service drop-down list.
- In the Enrollment deadline section, set a deadline by which the device must be enrolled in the new MDM solution, then select Continue.
Note: If a deadline is not set, the user does not receive a notification about having to complete enrollment and must do it manually via the device's Settings.
Result: The Assign Devices screen shows the progress of the device assignment. - Select Done.
Results: Device users receive an Enrollment Required notification. The notification is repeated as follows:
- Before the last 24 hours, the notification is displayed once every day.
- In the last 23 hours, the notification is displayed once every hour.
- In the last hour, the notification is displayed at 60-, 30-, 10-, and 1-minute intervals.
Assign an enrollment profile to your devices in Miradore
An enrollment profile specifies what happens when new or factory-reset devices are turned on for the first time, and how the devices will be configured as part of Apple's Automated Device Enrollment feature.
- In Miradore, navigate to Enrollment > Apple DEP.
- Select Update device list to synchronize your devices with Miradore.
Tip: Use tags to easily identify devices to which these managed configurations must be applied. - Assign an enrollment profile to your devices.
Complete enrollment
It is recommended that device users confirm enrollment on their device before the deadline is reached. Otherwise, the device automatically unenrolls from the previous MDM solution and re-enrolls to Miradore.
The steps to complete enrollment vary depending on the device platform.
Complete enrollment on iPhone or iPad
- Select View on the Enrollment Required notification.
Result: The VPN & Device Management menu opens. - Select Start Enrollment on the Enrollment Required prompt.
- When the Restart Required prompt appears, select Restart.
Results: The device is enrolled in Miradore.
Complete enrollment on Mac
- Select View on the Enrollment Required notification.
Result: The System Settings app opens. - Select Start Enrollment on the Enrollment Required prompt.

- Enter your username and password in the Enrollment Authentication window, then select Continue.
Result: The device is unenrolled from the previous MDM server and re-enrolls in Miradore. - Select Quit to close the Device Management screen.
Results: The device is enrolled in Miradore.
Monitor the enrollment process
You can keep an eye on your devices' enrollment status in one of two ways:
- In Miradore, navigate to Enrollment > Enrollment log and check the Status column.
- In Miradore, navigate to Enrollment > Apple DEP and check the Enrollment status column.
