Configure the OpenVPN app for Android

Learn how to configure the OpenVPN application for your managed Android devices to set up VPN connections.

Requirements

Managed Google Play store must be configured for your Miradore site. See Configuring managed Google Play Enterprise for instructions.

Have an OpenVPN configuration file at hand. See the OpenVPN documentation for instructions on creating the configuration file.

Configure OpenVPN for Android

To set up VPN connections on your managed Android devices using OpenVPN, you must create a managed configuration and then deploy it.

  1. Navigate to Management > Applications and select Add > Android application.
  2. Select Managed Google Play store, then select Next.
  3. Search for OpenVPN for Android, then select its tile.
  4. Click Select.
    Result: The app is added to your Miradore site and its page opens.
  5. Optional: On the Main tab, select the OpenVPN for Android tile under Select application version and configure any desired permission settings on the Permissions tab.

  6. Navigate to the Configurations tab of the application page and open the Select configuration drop-down menu.
  7. Select Add configuration and enter a name for your managed configuration, then press Enter.
  8. Add the List of VPN configurations setting to the configuration by selecting the Miradore - plus icon config table icon on the right.
    1. Select Add in the Add managed property to application configuration wizard.
    2. Select Close to exit the wizard.
  9. Expand the List of VPN configurations setting and add the VPN configuration setting to the configuration by selecting the Miradore - plus icon config table icon on the right.

    1. Select Add in the Add managed property to application configuration wizard.
    2. Select Close to exit the wizard.
  11. Expand the VPN configuration setting and add the Config setting to the configuration by selecting the Miradore - plus icon config table icon on the right.

    1. In the Add managed property to application configuration wizard, insert the contents of your OpenVPN configuration file in the Value field.
      Important: The value must be Base64 encoded.
    2. Select Add, then Close to exit the wizard.
  13. Expand the VPN configuration setting and add the Name setting to the configuration by selecting the Miradore - plus icon config table icon on the right.

    1. In the Add managed property to application configuration wizard, enter a name for your configuration in the Value field.
    2. Select Add, then Close to exit the wizard.
  15. Expand the VPN configuration setting and add the UUID setting to the configuration by selecting the Miradore - plus icon config table icon on the right.

    1. In the Add managed property to application configuration wizard, enter a UUID in the Value field.
      Use any of the UUID generator tools available on the internet to generate a UUID.
    2. Select Add, then Close to exit the wizard.
  17. Add the Version of the managed configuration schema (Currently always 1) setting to the configuration by selecting the Miradore - plus icon config table icon on the right.

    1. In the Add managed property to application configuration wizard, enter 1 in the Value field.
    2. Select Add, then Close to exit the wizard.
  19. Deploy the configured application to your managed Android devices.
