The transformation from Choose Your Own Device (CYOD) type of pre-selected device choice towards Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is predicted to rapidly accelerate. Gartner Research claims that through 2017, 90 percent of the enterprises will support some aspect of BYOD. Further they predict that by 2018, twice as many employee-owned devices will be used for work than enterprise-owned devices. It has many consequences for both business and IT leaders.

The change BYOD phenomena initiates in organizations is most often started by the business side. The challenge for IT professionals here is the fact that business leaders are often somewhat vague in their communication about BYOD. In many cases the reason causing miscommunication is that the business leaders are not capable of describing the primary ideas and drivers for the BYOD related IT service they ask for – they just want to get things done and keep the employees happy.

And sure, sometimes BYOD might be just a catchphrase for getting rid of your IT department’s choice of personal devices. Perhaps your staff wants Android, iPhone, iPad or Mac devices – and you’ve made that impossible in the current regime. If so, this is the right time to act.

Find out what your business needs

We all know that one of the clear benefits of BYOD is cost savings but it is not the primary reason why business leaders are driving BYOD. When IT takes at least part of the responsibility of making BYOD business-driven as well, it will help both sides to tackle the challenge.

Some of the possible business drivers could be:

  • Your business is becoming more agile
  • Your company is hiring more part-timers
  • Need to create an incentive to achieve unmet goals
  • Forcing the services to the cloud
  • Solving the two-laptop-dilemma; one for private and one for business use

You won’t know until you’ve spent enough time and really understood why. Here are some additional questions and suggestions for you:

  • Find out why other players within your industry want to utilize BYOD for business goals, and what are the specific drivers they have in mind.
  • Does your company have the same drivers and end-customer situations?
  • Can you find a better way and a process, perhaps a new competitive edge?


Don’t leave your business alone

Summarized, BYOD initiatives require new kind of skills, better communication, and most importantly a slightly different approach and attitude towards ‘these annoying non-standard devices’.

Some of you might recall the good old notion of Business IT Alignment. Yes, a successful BYOD program requires this, it is like IT’s yin & yang.

I am convinced that once you understand the business pain points and business drivers it’s a lot easier to plan a project that solves the business issues while creating a trusted BYOD program for your organization. Without understanding the real goals and drivers, you have a good shot at creating more dissatisfied end-users. One of who may be the boss of your boss.

  3. Ensure that you have the right skills in your team. You need a guy or gal who is responsible for risk management: the one who looks after that the BYOD risks are identified and minimized. Another team member should concentrate on creating new possibilities and ways of working. The latter must communicate fluently with the business side.
