Kiosk mode options: Single and multi-app kiosk and the new Android Custom Launcher

2 min read

Andreas Handler

Almost every day, our customers discover new benefits of switching Android or iOS devices to kiosk mode.

Mobile devices with Android and iOS are a cost-effective alternative to more expensive kiosk systems with Windows operating systems and are also easy to manage. Perhaps you also have an application that will work (better) with the kiosk functionality.

iOS

Miradore supports a single-app kiosk mode for iOS. In this mode, you can select an app that is always displayed in the foreground.

Additional functions are optionally available, such as

  • Locking touch input
  • Locking screen rotation
  • Deactivating screen lock
  • Locking the volume buttons, the mute switch and the on/off switch

Android

For Android, Miradore supports both single-app and multi-app kiosk mode. This allows you to specify that one or more apps may be opened by the user.

However, one disadvantage of the multi-app kiosk mode is that all other apps remain visible, even if they cannot be started.

For this reason, we have published the "Android Custom Launcher". This new feature is available via the "Home Screen & Kiosk Mode" configuration profile. With the Android Custom Launcher, you can explicitly define a list of apps that should be visible and accessible to the user.

In addition, this new kiosk mode offers further options, such as locking the

  • Home button
  • Notification center
  • "Recent apps" function
  • Global actions (e.g. restart, lock screen
  • System bar

Practical tip
Kiosk users often want to access a specific setting option (e.g. Bluetooth only). Until recently, there was no solution for this.
However, there is now a free app in the Managed Google Play Store that can be used in combination with a Managed App Config to implement this requirement:

Use cases

This list gives you a rough overview of how the kiosk mode on Android or iOS can support your organization:

  • Point-of-sale (POS) devices such as cash registers or ordering systems
  • Ticket control for events
  • Meter reading systems for gas, water or electricity
  • Logistics systems in vehicles
  • Systems for passenger transportation logistics
  • Time recording systems
  • Readout systems for construction machinery
  • Presentation of sales documents in car dealerships
  • Charging terminals for electric vehicles
  • Monitoring systems in the healthcare sector
  • Devices for employees at ski lifts
  • Digital menus
  • Presentation screens at trade fairs or events
  • ... and much more
