How to Prevent Locked Android and iOS Mobile Devices

Small and mid-sized businesses face many challenges related to managing their mobile end devices, one of which is dealing with locked devices.

Locked devices can result from a number of circumstances, such as an employee forgetting their passcode, or receiving a device from another employee who has not turned over their access.

As a mobile device management solution, Miradore can help you be proactive in avoiding these problems.

In this blog, we’ll look into how Miradore can help you prevent encountering locked Android and Apple end devices.

Preventing locked Android end devices

Android devices may have a setting that resets the device after ten incorrect PIN code entries. This measure is designed to help if an end device falls into the hands of someone who does not know the PIN code but is trying to gain access to the device.

But let’s suppose there are no bad actors involved, and a device was only locked by accident.

Once an end device has been turned off then on again, it can only communicate with your mobile device management (MDM) server again following the entry of the correct PIN code. Without the PIN code, data on the end device may be lost if it wasn't backed up to the server prior to locking.

In some cases, you can at least continue to use the device even without the PIN code. However, if the device was locked with a Google account that you do not have access to, then you can no longer use it at all.

This is where Miradore comes in handy.

Miradore enables you to create a setting that adjusts the Factory Reset Protection mode. It’s recommended that you apply this setting, especially in combination with Knox Mobile Enrolment or Android for Enterprise Zero Touch.

Furthermore, Miradore now supports Direct Boot. Direct Boot enables you to access a device that was turned off and whose PIN code is unknown by resetting the PIN code via Miradore. Wiping data off end devices remotely is also possible.

Preventing locked iOS end devices

Nowadays, devices that are registered in Apple Business Manager are freed from the activation lock, even if they aren't registered in your MDM system as supervised devices. Previously, that was only possible for devices that were registered in the MDM system as supervised devices.

This innovation prevents end devices from becoming unusable after accidental locking, as long as they are devices already assigned to the business.

As with Android, Apple devices also need to be reset if the PIN code is unknown and the device was turned off. With Miradore, you can configure a reset after ten incorrect entries.

Alternatively, you can set up a restriction in Miradore that prevents changing passcodes on Apple devices, thereby preventing an unknown passcode in the first place.

Avoid locked devices with Miradore

Even when you take the greatest care, human error is still possible.

It’s best to have measures in place in your business to regain access to locked devices, as well as prevent devices from becoming unusable and ending up as electronic scrap.
